In a time when today’s youth are seeking spaces to be heard, supported, and challenged, Building Leaders Advocating for Change (BLAC) is answering the call—one after-school session at a time.
Through its robust and intentional programming, BLAC is redefining what after-school time can look like in the DeKalb and Sycamore communities. Gone are the days of idle hours and missed opportunities. Instead, students ages 10 to 18 now have access to a wide range of hands-on, youth-driven learning experiences that prepare them not just for the next grade—but for life.
At the heart of the program is a commitment to equity, empowerment, and excellence. Each initiative is crafted to give youth a platform for self-expression, exploration, and growth in a world that often underestimates their potential. Whether through STEM-based learning, the CHOP Junior Chef program, or Teen Talk, students are encouraged to think critically, dream boldly, and take action in their communities.
“We believe in creating safe, affirming spaces where young people can explore who they are, while also gaining the skills to lead others,” says a BLAC team member. “This is about building confidence, character, and community—all at the same time.”
The programming includes a diverse set of focus areas:
• Academic Support & Tutoring to ensure every student is reaching their potential in the classroom
• Mental Health Education to help youth navigate emotional wellness and build healthy coping strategies
• STEM workshops that make science and technology fun, accessible, and future-focused
• CHOP Junior Chef, a culinary-based program teaching youth how to make nutritious, budget-friendly meals
• Teen Talk, a peer-led space for open dialogue, identity exploration, and community building
These sessions not only offer academic enrichment but foster emotional intelligence, independence, and resilience. From creating their own business plans to leading conversations on social justice, youth are not just participants in these programs—they’re leaders in the making.
And that work doesn’t stop at the school bell. With consistent support, culturally relevant programming, and a vision for long-term change, BLAC’s after-school efforts are equipping young people with the tools to become not only scholars and professionals—but advocates, creators, and visionaries.
As BLAC continues to expand its reach and impact, one thing remains clear: when youth are given the space, support, and resources to lead, they will rise—and lead boldly.
