The J.F. Glidden Homestead & Historical Center in DeKalb, Illinois, is proud to announce the 150th anniversary of the creation of Joseph F. Glidden’s “The Winner” barbed wire.
Not only did Glidden’s creation “fence the West,” allowing for westward expansion, it allowed its creator the opportunity to leave a legacy, such as bringing the railroad and Northern Illinois University to his beloved DeKalb, putting this small but innovative town on the map. His contributions make our mission of sharing this story even more important.
You are invited to help us celebrate as we are planning a variety of fun, unique and exciting programs. These events will be held over the next two years as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of “The Winner,” the world’s most commercially successful barbed wire, which was created in DeKalb in 1873 and patented in 1874. With so much to celebrate, we hope you can join us with a donation, membership, or visit to the birthplace of barbed wire, as we continue to preserve this important history for generations to come.
