DeKalb Park District Welcomes New Executive Director Paul Zepezauer

The DeKalb Park District is thrilled to announce Paul Zepezauer’s appointment as the new Executive Director. Paul brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success in park management and community recreation, making him an invaluable addition to our team and the DeKalb community.

Paul Zepezauer holds a Bachelor of Science in Health, Leisure, and Sport Studies with an emphasis in Community and Commercial Recreation from the University of Iowa. His professional journey is marked by significant achievements and leadership roles across various park districts in Illinois.

Most recently, Paul served as the Executive Director of the Byron Park District. He was responsible for all operations of one recreation facility, one outdoor athletic complex, and four parks during his tenure. Paul successfully supervised a team of five full-time employees and approximately seventy-five part-time/seasonal employees, managing an annual budget of approximately $2.8 million. He oversaw a $3.5 million expansion and renovation of the Byron PE Center and completed three OSLAD grant park projects. Additionally, Paul led the District through the Illinois Distinguished Agency Accreditation process, reflecting his commitment to excellence.

Before his role in Byron, Paul was the Director of Recreation for the Sterling Park District. He managed the operations of multiple facilities, including the Duis Recreation Center, Westwood Fitness & Sports Center, Emerald Hill Golf Course, and Oppold Marina. Paul played a pivotal role in the renovation projects of these facilities and was instrumental in forming the Sterling Parks Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization.

Paul’s career began at the Elk Grove Park District, where he served as Athletics Coordinator and later as Vice President of the Elk Grove Parks Foundation. His innovative approach significantly increased athletic department revenue and net profit by expanding programs and improving operational efficiencies.

Paul expressed his enthusiasm about joining the DeKalb Park District: “I am excited to join the DeKalb Park District and look forward to working with the Board of Commissioners and staff to provide outstanding parks, recreation facilities, and recreation programs to the DeKalb community.”

He resides in Dixon with his wife, Christy, and two sons, Tyler and Jake.
