Julie Bassett, founder and president of Together for Taft has been recognized by Influential Women for her work and nonprofit leadership, environmental advocacy, community, organizing and coalition building.
Bassett founded Together for Taft in September 2024 as a grassroots effort, focused on preserving and reimagining the historic Lorado Taft Field Campus in Oregon, Illinois. Her work has grown to include environmental education, public speaking, community engagement, and bringing together individuals and organizations around a shared vision for the future of the 141-acre property along the Rock River.
A Sycamore resident and retired educator, from the DeKalb School District, with more than 20 years of teaching experience, Bassett has made more than 50 speaking and media appearances over the past 16 months, including three NPR Perspectives, television and radio interviews and multiple podcasts.
Bassett credits persistence, curiosity, a strong sense of purpose, and her belief in bringing people together as central to her work.
“I’m learning that I don’t have to know exactly how everything is going to unfold before I take the next step,” Bassett shared in her Influential Women interview.
